Family Background

Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia on February 9, 1944. She comes from a family of sharecropper. But in addition to her African American birth, her family has Cherokee, Scottish and Irish ancestry. She was the last-born  in the eight siblings. Her great grandparents were slaves, and her great grandmother who was a slave walked from Virginia to Georgia with her two small children. Minnie Tallulah Grant Walker, Walker’s mother worked as a domestic servant, but she wanted her daughter to get  a good education and she put her in school and encouraged her by getting her things like a type writer. On the other hand her relationship with her father was not very cordial as academic inclinations became obvious as he was comfortable with educating his children. One incident which was defining in her earlier life and impacted her personality and her choices was an accident when she was injured by her brother’s  BB gun this made her an outcast and reclusive. Skills and Completed Goals

Alice walker today is not only a novelist but a  short-story writer, poet, essayist and  an acclaimed feminist but also a civil rights activist and a campaigner for different causes and has incorporated it into her different writings. She became involved in the Civil Rights Movement when during her years at college she was influenced by Howard Zinn. But this interest continued even after she left college. She returned to south and took part in the voter registration drive. She also campaigned for welfare rights and children’s programs in Mississippi. (White 42)
