This term paper compares Babylon Revisited and Hills Like White Elephants. There are sharp contrasts between hills like white elephants and Babylon Revisited. One being the set of people the authors are writing about. Hemingway writes about middle class people, the average person.

It is interesting to note that Babylon Revisited opens and closes in the Ritz bar, signifying possibly everything is the same for Charlie.  On the other hand, in Hills Like White Elephants, the characters seem to have nothing to do in life apart from sex and drinking. The location of the Bar is a similarity, because in the case of Hemingway’s story the whole conversation takes place in the bar.

There are sharp contrasts between hills like white elephants and Babylon Revisited. One being the set of people the authors are writing about. Hemingway writes about middle class people, the average person. Hemingway chooses not to give the narrator a name. Fitzgerald on the other hand is not at ease to write about the middle class people. His narrator lives a rich life. However, The biggest difference between these stories lies in the author’s style of writing.

The position in Babylon Revisited is much more personal than Hills Like White Elephants which increases to the difference. Fitzgerald give details to the reader in such a detailed descriptions, that he or she and pictures him or her self in any scene very easily. Hemingway in contrast gives almost no details and the reader has to fill in the empty spaces using his or her own imagination. While there may be key style disparities between these stories, they both are very successful in putting their message across.

In the case of Babylon Revisited, most prominent characteristic of this short story is the protagonist’s problem of loss, and dealing with that loss is most significant.  While in the case of Hills Like White Elephants the turmoil is more inward within Jig the girl who is still not sure whether the abortion is a good idea. These stories study closely the interaction between the characters.
