For Arciniegas, the Carib­bean Sea was the Mediterranean of the New World, “a place of fertile and dramatic amasses of peoples, races, religions, and cultures.” Today we know that region as the Greater Caribbean,. Arciniegas’ account of its history was one of the first of its kind by a native scholar. Arciniegas broke with the traditional nationalist perspectives of Hispanic American historians by incorporating this part of the world into the long history of the West, represent the Caribbean as the equivalent of the Mediterranean; an integral part of the violent expansion of the Judeo‑Christian world that began with the arrival of Columbus at the shores of Hispaniola.
