Introduction

The concept of empowerment has been at the root of many social movements throughout history. The Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, and Gay Rights movement all shared the fundamental notion of empowerment.  The idea was to gain freedom and control over individual lives, by challenging the set power structures that embraced institutionalized oppression. Empowerment has since been a vehicle for change and as such has driven and implemented itself into other areas of life.  A further examination of this perception can be applied to the workplace.  In seeking insight into organizational behavior, one may find empowerment at opposite ends of the spectrum serving as both a challenge and an opportunity.

Today’s organizational leaders are probing for innovative ways to develop the creative potential of their workforce and achieve that extra competitive advantage. In the business world, what compels companies to realize the empowerment process is the promise of superior operational and financial performance as it results from an increase in overall employee ownership, involvement and job contentment. Employee empowerment is a management concept that has been the subject of research for over 50 years. Despite an increasing recognition of the “employee empowerment movement”, very few companies today are truly empowered and programs intended to empower meet with very little success. Furthermore, empowerment, and the strategies for implementing it, is far from being a plain “quick fix”.
