Essay: Gender Differences
These gender differences in capability and impressions are more prevalent at lower and middle level management than executive levels. Lower and middle level management have more gender stereotyping because of the existence of gender views and attitudes with the subordinates.
The research by Gardiner A. Rita analyzed results from different surveys where the attributes of the subordinates were contributory factors to effective leadership. Followers who thought their leader’s characteristic was closer to their own perception viewed them as better leaders. For this reason, women leaders obtained less respect when they were viewed by their subordinates to be gender discrepant. Hence subordinates who had traditional views on the roles of gender portrayed the least respect to their female leaders.
