Essay: Genre: Effect of Historical Materials
The degree to which 16th century historians needed to shape and choose their source materials greatly varied. The argument is that the attitudes to writing history have changed dramatically in the course of centuries (Chernaik 3).
The main sources of Shakespeare’s writings, Hall, Thomas and Holinshed are founded on the basis of including as much as possible of the facts. However, it is not surprising to find Tudor Orthodoxy writers including random information to allow for different voices. The credibility of these sources is questioned, as Holinshed juxtaposes several accounts of events within his chronicles (Chernaik 5). The research reveals that renaissance historians often looked for coherence from events described in their writings but considered this aspect as implicit in the events rather than by the historian. Overall, historians embrace these writings as exemplary for they provide history with a rich source of practical lessons.
