Essay: Harper’s role in play Angels and Demons

Sample Essay

Harper’s role goes against the silent and submissive stereotype that women suffered from in that age. Hers is a character that can voice its opinions and is independent at last.

“In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we’ve left behind, and dreaming ahead.”

The other character who goes through a journey of self discovery and change is Louis. A young and modern Jew, he is Prior’s lover, but unable to remain loyal or supportive. He expresses feelings of guilt and remorse for his decision, and viewers would call him callous, but his leaving Prior may be viewed as an honest decision that requires guts. It may be selfish, but in Louis’ mind, not being someone’s lover was better than being a lousy one. Louis also voices many political statements which find some favor with the other characters. Politics aside, in the end, Louis emerges as a man who is fully aware of the consequences and implications of the decisions he has taken and ready to repent for his wrongs and feel real love.
