This essay discusses euthanasia. Euthanasia is a way a person dies painlessly and peacefully. It has been defined as a way to deliberately put a person to death to take away their suffering from whatever incurable and painful disease which they have. It is a form o f mercy killing (New Standard Encyclopedia Dictionary).

There are many other terms which are used to define euthanasia; assisted suicide, mercy killing and even physician assisted suicide are other ways to define euthanasia. Euthanasia can either be active or inactive. If euthanasia is inactive and unresponsive, it is due to the fact that an ill person refuses to take medicine or asks that the support he is being medically be stopped.

Inactive or unresponsive euthanasia is also defined as when a doctor gives medication which could kill a terminally ill patient. Sometimes an overdose is also given to end the patient’s life. Active euthanasia refers to when a person purposely kills someone else; as when a lethal injection is given to an ill patient. Euthanasia can either be voluntary or not. When euthanasia is voluntary, the terminally ill patient actually wants to die. When euthanasia is involuntary however, the person who is dying does not have the right to give their consent.
