Oates starts off on a November morning in 1988, in her memoirs, she hears her father playing the piano with flair, and she thinks about how mysterious people’s personalities are even those whom you have known all your life, comparing her parents to the mysterious music which people don’t try to comprehend even though they are listening to it, similarly people are also mysterious even if they are your parents.

She wonders how their past full of suffering and problems lead them to be such beautiful human beings. She asks if there is no link between surrounding and experiences and the personalities of people. In addition, how much do the facts help in knowing the people.

Her father Fredrick Oates and his mother were abandoned by his father , the writer’s grandfather when Fred was just 2 or 3. Then he reappeared again after 28 years not to beg forgiveness but to beat up his only son. The father had heard that the son wanted to beat his own father so he came forward to fight with him but then Fred could not bring himself to hit a man in his fifties. Oates says although both she and her father resembled her grandfather, however she never saw his picture and her grandmother always said “he was no good”.
