There is a misconstruction that genetic behavior or characteristic cannot be altered or changed. Genes do not ensure a behavior they just give possible behavioral actions related to possible experiences. Psychologist cannot agree as to how much the factors of genetics and upbringing shape intelligence but most would agree that inborn genes perhaps set the upper or lower limits of academic ability but that environmental aspects influence whether a person attain their genetically determined potential. The environmental and genetic factors are intricate and continuously work together with each other making it hard to establish which has the greatest influence. Studies have been done with twins to try to investigate the genetics versus situation debate. Identical twins have precisely the same genes consequently any differences between them must be due to environmental factors. It has been shown that identical twins raised in the same home have very similar IQ scores however identical twins raised in separate home have different IQ scores. This seems to show that the environment has some influence on intelligence.
