This term paper discusses HIV/AIDS. Just like a soccer team that tries to stop the ball from going into its net, our bodies try to stop any disease from hurting it. In soccer, the people that try to stop the other team from scoring are usually called “defenders”. In your body, these defenders are called your immune system and the ball would be a disease.

Just like a soccer team that tries to stop the ball from going into its net, our bodies try to stop any disease from hurting it. In soccer, the people that try to stop the other team from scoring are usually called “defenders”. In your body, these defenders are called your immune system and the ball would be a disease, like a cold or chicken pox, trying to get past the defenders to infect your body.

If defenders smoke, take drugs, don’t eat the right food, aren’t happy and don’t keep fit, then that ball is going to get past them and they will concede a goal and lose the match. The same goes for your own body. If you smoke, take drugs and don’t keep fit, then your immune system gets weaker too and cannot help you to fight off the different diseases that want to make you sick.

The HIV virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) makes your ‘defenders’ sick, so that they are not able to protect your goal (or your body) from diseases. A Premier League team, like your own body, should easily be able to cope with Third Division strikers like colds and flu, Second Division strikers like measles and mumps and First Division strikers like hepatitis. But when your defenders are ‘sick’ or ‘unfit’ or even ‘missing’ from the match, then any of these strikers can score against you and you could lose the match. If your team continually lets in goals and loses matches, then it may eventually be relegated through all the divisions and may even go out of business. In the same way, if your immune system is weakened by the HIV virus, it cannot fight off diseases and you will get sick and could even die.
