Essay: King David
This essay is on King David. Though King David would become one of the most famous men in history, his rise to power was not easy. David was not a perfect man, yet God laid out a path for his life and used him despite his mistakes and the obstacles that he encountered along the way.
Though King David would become one of the most famous men in history, his rise to power was not easy. David was not a perfect man, yet God laid out a path for his life and used him despite his mistakes and the obstacles that he encountered along the way.
King David came into the world without desiring to be the King of Israel, nor did he feel, when he discovered that he had been chosen, that he was worthy of the honored position. In 1 Samuel 16:12 and 17:42, readers of the Bible are introduced to this young man who was completely unaware of the future that God had planned for him. His career began quite normally as a shepherd tending sheep in Bethlehem. In 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Samuel came to visit the city and to search for the man, son of Jesse, whom God had promised would be King. Surely, it was Eliab, but it was not. The Lord told Samuel, “do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature . . . for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). The new King was David, the youngest [son of Jesse], of ruddy complexion, bright eyes and good looking (1 Samuel 16:12).
David seemed to be unaffected after Samuel anointed him, for he went back to his life as a shepherd. His rise to power would not be quick and after that day something had indeed happened. First, God’s Spirit came upon David (1 Samuel 16:13) and God’s spirit left King Saul (1 Samuel 16:14) for Saul, Israel’s first king, had gone against His will.
