Infectious mononucleosis, also known as mono, kissing disease and glandular fever is a  very common illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is a member of the herpes virus family. By the time most people reach adulthood, an antibody against EBV can be reveal in their blood. It means that most people at some point in their life have been infected with EBV. Occurrence and Spread of Mononucleosis

EBV is usually spread by person to person contact. Saliva is the main way of transmitting the disease. A person with Mononucleosis can also pass the illness by coughing or sneezing, causing small drops of infected saliva and/or mucus to be suspended in the air which can be breathe in by others. Sharing food or drink from the same container or utensil can also transmit the virus from one person to another since connection with infected saliva may result.

The majority of people have been exposed to the virus as children, and as a result of the exposure, have developed immunity. Though most persons who are exposed to the EBV do not ever develop mononucleosis. The incubation period for “mono,” is between four and six weeks. During an infection, a person is able to transmit the virus to others for at least a few weeks.
