A single parent with two children, earning a minimum wage of $5.15 an hour would not earn enough to pull the family above the poverty line.

A visit t to a local employment agency was very revealing about the current state of unemployment, the lady in charge said that there was a shortage of jobs even part-time ones and the she had hundreds of people looking for jobs who were laid off had only part-time work. In addition in her view minorities were particularly hard hit by the growing unemployment.
