I did not find myself appalled by how the party treated foreigners making them feel unwanted in their land. I did not find it at all surprising that the students in Hessler’s class expressed the opinions they did. Nor did I find surprising that despite the training the author went through to become acclimated to the Chinese language, he still found himself barely able to function when he got there.

Through perseverance and youthful exuberance however, the author eventually finds his way. His Chinese improves as he goes from being ridiculed by the locals to eventually chatting with strangers at the local teahouses and noodle restaurants. He finds that xenophobia and hospitality are not mutually exclusive feelings within this province. Rather he eventually finds acceptance among the people, some of whom even invite him back to their homes. It is the combination of this rural and urban setting that makes up the crux of the authors travels and show the complete picture of “River Town.”
