This essay discusses Telemachus in the Odyssey. In the initial part of the book, even though Telemachus is eighteen, he is still immature. Odysseus was almost never present all through Telemachus’ childhood. As a result of this, he feels it is his duty to look after his mother. However, Telemachus lacks the determination to drive out the suitors and he doesn’t fully think through his actions. In spite of Telemachus’ age, he does not begin the transformation from childhood to adulthood until Athena comes to him.
In today’s society, it is not generally expected that a young male would assume his adult role at 18 years of age. Telemachus, in the epic Odyssey is a young boy who is Odysseus’s son however he has never seen his father. In the initial part of the book, even though Telemachus is eighteen, he is still immature. On the other hand Athena displays her role as an energetic leader in her defense of Telemachus. At the outset of poem, the Odyssey, she “flies” to him in the shape of Mentes, a Taphian captain, to speak to him and advise him to look for his father, Odysseus. When she is with him, she carries out conversation with him, sitting with him, she also drinks and eats with him sits, drinks, dines, and carries on conversation. Later on, she also takes on Mentor’s form to talk to him. The books I-IV describe, Telemachus beginning to find his way and starting on his path toward manhood.
