On other occasions, I have had to tell a parent that his or her child has been injured or killed in gang or other criminal violence. I have also been faced with the necessity of assisting parents who are experiencing difficulties in coping with their offspring – working to find effective interventions that have the potential to “turn around” a juvenile headed for disaster. There have been times when I have enjoyed great success in these efforts, but there have also been occasions when I have had to recognize that a particular juvenile simply cannot be “saved” or helped.
In have also worked as an educator in an alternative school – a school containing classrooms that are serving troubled young people, many of who are adjudicated delinquents who are required to continue their education while simultaneously undergoing some form of incarceration as a consequence of their offenses. In this capacity, I work with boys and girls in grades 6 through 8 at Houston’s Independent School District Crispus Attacks School. Many of the young people served in this school and in my own classroom have committed violent crimes, and some are multiple offenders with lengthy criminal records. Others are troubled youth who have demonstrated that they need intensive supervision and are what is known as “status offenders,” or juveniles whose behavior is an “offense” because of their age. Students who are truant, who run away from home, who use alcohol, or who otherwise behave in a manner proscribed for people their age fall into this category.
