Toni Morrison was born as Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio on February 18, 1931. Her parents moved to Ohio from south to escape racism. Her parents came from sharecropper’s family. Lorrain was a predominantly black community and Morrison grew up with her three other siblings, she was second child of George Wofford, and Ramah Willis Wofford. Her father was a welder in the shipyard and he was popular because of his knack for oral storytelling. Toni’s father was a hardworking and responsible man and worked three jobs for seventeen years. To support his family while the children were growing up. He was very proud of his work ax a welder and whenever he had a perfect seam he would inscribe his name on it. Even during the depression years her parents made great effort to be dressed well. Her mother was a homemaker and a regular at the church; she was also a member of the Church Choir. Morrison since an early age read a lot. And at home was made aware of her rich heritage and was proud of it.

The most important recognition for Toni Morrison was to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She was the first and only black woman to receive this honor. The recognition appreciated her work:

Even though her novels revolve around African American women but Morrison does not consider herself to be a feminist in addition she does not label her work as feminist. In her opinion the feeling that her work may be feminist may stop a lot of readers as they may not feel comfortable with it. Instead she feels that the work is matriarchal rather than feminist. For her the important thing is equality and equal access and equal opportunity for everyone. (Jaffrey) As an editor, Morrison played an important role in bringing into the mainstream. She edited books by such black authors as Toni Cade Bambara, Angela Davis and Gayl Jones.
