The Basseri Tribe is variously described as Arab and Persian and nomadic within a defined territory. The areas that the Basseri migrate in are the steep mountains of South, East, and North Shiraz in Fars province, South Persia. The Fars province, neighboring on the Persian Gulf, is adept for agriculture and has a wide variety of animals and birds to hunt. It is also known as the “land of nomadic tribes.” Marriage happens between the ages of sixteen and twenty years of age for females, but males may be much older than that. The father of the bride usually equips his daughter with a numeral of household items, and may give sheep to his son-in-law. The mothers of the couple typically get together and weave the tent in which they are to live in. The woman joins her husband in the tent and an independent economic unit is formed. Inside the household, distribution of authority between men and women is almost equal. They share the responsibility of making judgment that will greatly affect the family in the domestic domain and in that facet.
The choice of spouse lies directly in the hands of the parents; and even adult men, e.g. widowers, never discuss their own marriages, but act through a senior relative. Once a father and son agreed to seek a betrothal, the son starts performing a sort of casual bride-service, helping his future father-in-law by fetching wood, serving tea, and assisting in tasks requiring the co-operation of several men, such as breaking in young horse riding, or shearing sheep.(Barth 87) Gifts for the girl are also presented to her father, the acceptance of which places him under a certain compulsion, while the denial or return of such gifts is a clear idiom of dismissal.
