She was a very famous writer by this time in 1976 but was much of a recluse preferring to stay at home write and teach at the university. However, she enjoyed and was very fond of socializing and attending parties.
Her outward appearance was much more deceiving, according to Johnson no one would imagine that this quite and demurely dressed woman was a famous and serious author. However, when she came on stage she became transformed into a very eloquent and witty speaker talking and discussing between the readings and she was very casual.
For the author this was just a beginning and gradually he started writing about her work researching on it and writing book reviews. In the mean time, he started correspondence with her discussing her work and she responded by writing long letters. He became so involved that he wanted to know the person behind the work, therefore he was very happy when she gave him permission to go through her journals. This exercise made the person even more complicated as he tried to find a common ground between her work and her life.
