When we are young children, we generally have a pretty limited list of possible careers that we consider. There’s police officer, and firefighter, doctor, and teacher and astronaut. Maybe president or prime minister. And that’s pretty much it. Fortunately for all of us, the range of actual careers is much greater than this. However, even after we realize that there are a wealth of jobs out there that we might consider, it is still difficult to know what we should plan to spend our lives doing because so many of those jobs remain hidden away. This paper explores one of those far-from-visible jobs, which provides an intellectually satisfying path for many people – and which would no doubt appeal to even more people if only they knew what on earth it was.
Global logistics is an increasingly important and increasingly sophisticated field whose existence is based in part on new computer technologies that have helped to transform the way in which we work as well as our increasingly globalized economy. We are more and more likely to buy and use things made in another part of the world even as we rely on computer technologies to create invisible interfaces between us and coworkers whom we may never meet and who live a dozen time zones away.
