This is an essay discussing a case against the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1960 in northeastern Alaska to protect and maintain its ecosystems. Evidently, the refuge would not have been had there not been significant environmental issues to consider. A variety of wildlife including 36 fish species, 36 kinds of land mammals, over 160 bird species, and 9 marine animals, reside in this protected area.

Introduction

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1960 in northeastern Alaska to protect and maintain its ecosystems. Evidently, the refuge would not have been had there not been significant environmental issues to consider. A variety of wildlife including 36 fish species, 36 kinds of land mammals, over 160 bird species, and 9 marine animals, reside in this protected area. This 19.6 million acre wildlife sanctuary is the most important on-shore denning area in the United States for polar bears, and it is the principal calving ground of the 130,000 Porcupine Caribou herd. These animals “Are vulnerable to having their lives and futures disrupted by the arrival of man and machine” (Anderson, Hil). I am totally against the drilling for Oil in the 1002 Area of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, because it will create a variety of negative effects on its delicate ecosystem including disruption of wildlife patterns, pollution, and alteration of the land. It will have a negative impact on our country’s economy that will far outweigh its benefits, and because it will definitely not be the key to stop America’s dependence on foreign oil.

Effect on Wildlife

Along with drilling, comes the use of heavy industrialized machinery, emissions of nitrogen oxides, methane and carbon dioxide. The significant air pollution and water that is emitted from oil drilling will damage the atmosphere and contaminate rivers and lakes. The wildlife will be severely affected. These animals will be forced to alter their migratory patterns and relocate inlands, the results of which could be innumerable problems for countless species for a great many years to come.
