This essay discusses the censorship of internet in China. Websites such as ‘Facebook’, ‘Wikipedia’ and ‘YouTube’ are used by almost every individual within the United States. Whether it is a child, teenager or adult, everyone uses these websites amongst many others and has certainly heard of them.

Websites such as ‘Facebook’, ‘Wikipedia’ and ‘YouTube’ are used by almost every individual within the United States. Whether it is a child, teenager or adult, everyone uses these websites amongst many others and has certainly heard of them. The internet is generally quite open with all types of material available to people. Due to it being uncensored, parents are required to make use of parental control options. In China on the other hand, all these websites have been banned or blocked by the government. The Chinese government has placed filters and firewalls which prevent people from making use of these websites. The only way someone can use these sites is if they are able to get around the tight security placed by the government on the internet. Even though the Chinese government has placed control and censored the internet as a way of protecting its people, it is also seen as a way by which freedom of speech and development is blocked.

China certainly has reasons behind censoring websites over the internet. There is a need to guide people and the opinions they have via the internet (McCabe). The reason behind the government censoring the internet is to reduce the amount of porn, rumors and fraud committed through this medium of communication. This is also something which the Chinese people want stopped (McCabe).
