According to Selwood (2001) the marketing and meaning of tourism is changing. From the mass marketing style in tourism now each tour is custom made on a one-on-one basis based on individualized tours and interest. In addition a large number of tourists are now special interest travelers who consider culture, arts and heritage and other related activities as the key reason to travel. But according to him the area of Highlands has not considered this and has not initiated many efforts at marketing the highland culture to the tourist populations. Generally the cultural tourists are drawn to the area for its location or heritage rather than cultural reasons. Art and cultural heritage of these areas is as yet untapped although these places are very rich in such aspects. In addition the economic ramifications from cultural tourism are quite significant however there is still a need to focus on them to tap in their real potential. According to the authors this is a niche market and this is particularly significant as these are very remote areas. And the long-term benefits for such steps are very promising.
Anderson and Nurick, 2002, believe that the traditional economic appraisal of cultural initiatives only concentrate on the frequently used measures like total number of visitors attracted, new jobs created, profits produced. Though, they contend that they do not reveal unquantifiable influences on the areas and regions in which cultural initiatives are located, and the test lies in how to calculate the altered picture and aspirations of a location and the value of life of its citizens owing to the impact of culture. They point out that everyday new evidence shows that the quality of life in that area becomes more significant when choosing a location for skilled workers and investors. In addition cultural projects can significantly reinforce a city or area’s brand or image and makes it seem more appealing as individuals and society perceive it in more favorable terms.
