Fortunately, in the 1990’s, two nonpartisan organizations emerged that would change the character education scene dramatically, and restore the schools’ role as a moral compass for development of character.  In 1992, Stanford McDonnell founded the Character Education Partnership (CEP), and the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition was organized by the Josephson Institute of Ethics in 1993 (Josephson, 2002).  These groups came together to develop a consensus on ethical values that could be taught in the classroom without offending political, racial, religious, gender, or socioeconomic status.  They came up with what is known as the “Six Pillars of Character”: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, justice and fairness, caring and civic virtue, and citizenship (CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition, 2006).  Today, many schools across the nation have adopted these programs, or are teaching variations of these programs to children attending public schools.

According to Lickona, “The intentional teaching of good character is particularly important in today’s society since our youth face many opportunities and dangers unknown to earlier generations” (Character Education Partnership Website, 2006, p. 1).  In addition, children are bombarded with many more negative influences through the media and other sources which are excessively prevalent in today’s culture.  On top of that, there are many more daily stresses and pressures impinging on the time that families are able to spend together.
