It was a gloomy, cruel, insecure, and vicious religious system, the very opposite of the light and glory that was representative of the people of Israel, although at this time their existence was far from it. She lived in the time of the Judges (Ruth 1:1), about 1100 BC. The name Ruth means “mercy.” The word Ruth means “the Sight” or a “a female friend”
She had been married to Mahlon— Naomi’s son and when Mahlon died she became a widow. A widows life is not easy, especially in biblical times this was the worst fate for any woman. Widows in the Old Testament were the characteristic picture of impoverished people. And love for widows, consequently, was the main example of what it meant to be servant-hearted toward others, because their condition was so worrying.
