Introduction
Although the Soviet Union and the United States had been partners during World War II, their alliance quickly unraveled once they had conquered their common enemy. Different people have diverse views on the origins of the Cold War:
- responsibility of the Soviet Union
- responsibility of the United States
- both
The origins of the cold war are not actually that difficult to expose. Nor are these origins that intricate. In the west there is a tendency to place the entire blame of the cold war upon the shoulders of the Soviet Union. And so, there have been a few proceedings which have shaped this response. For example, when Mother Russia overthrew its tsar, made a revolution, became the Soviet Union, amalgamated itself under Lenin and formed an ideological structure called communism, the United States could only respond with fear and trepidation. The government could not recognize the simple fact that a country could exist with economic and political principles so perilously opposed to democracy and industrial capitalism.
The more instant and tangible causes of the cold war, the point to begin is World War Two itself. On July 25, 1945, two months after Germany had surrendered, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Harry Truman met at Potsdam in order to talk about the fate of Germany. By 1945, Stalin was the veteran radical, a man who had held the reins of Soviet power and authority for almost twenty years.
