Noble argues that university administrators, in collaboration with technologically advanced organizations and budding educational sectors, are maneuverings the inverted, commercialization of education as “courseware.” Making it a product or marketable tools. In the resulting fight, creating a rivalry between the classroom (the teacher) and the boardroom (the college administration), the prize is no less than taking charge of higher education. If the administration wins, warns Noble,
“We will look upon the wired remains of our once great democratic higher education system and wonder how we let it happen”
He predicts signs of the destructive effects of the computerization of education: rising technology-driven expenditures, decline of educational excellence, decrease of staff and student contribution in the educational administrative practice, discouragement of the independence and autonomy of staff, damage to faculty power and rights over their academic assets, rising mechanization and outsourcing of the training role, decline of interaction with students, and loss of student confidentiality through the check and documentation of distance learning courses.
He is correct. In my view, the use of technology has to be monitored and used with restraint so that it does not interfere with the academic side of the learning process. In addition, the intrusion of the corporations is not a very encouraging event. As with everything else their involvement in the administration of the educational process will lead to making the colleges and universities a profit making product rather than a source of knowledge to be imparted to the students to help them become successful as well as instilling in them the values that make them better human beings. The human values and ideals need to be present for people to function in society. However, if the human side of education is taken out of the equation we get a society full of technology driven individuals who are isolated in their lives.
