Margaret Wertheim’s article in New York Times discusses the research being conducted by Dr. Francis Crick and Dr. Christof  Koch to solve the problem between body and mind or how consciousness works. Dr. Crick is one of the discoverers of the double Helix or the structure of DNA, and has been popular because of this discovery however; he has always been interested in question of consciousness. For this reason he has teamed up with Dr. Koch of the California Institute of Technology, to understand and explain consciousness which has been ignored by other scientists.

Dr. Crick’s philosophy is the foundation of Dr. Koch’s research, the objective is to find ”the neural correlates of consciousness,” or N.C.C.’s, the neuronal states and processes associated with conscious awareness. Even philosophers like Dr. Chalmers admit that there is some structure to the working of brain and consciousness.

Experiments by DR. Koch’s team have shown that a specific area of the brain anterior cingulate cortex is activated during experiment, implying that that a specific part is responsible for consciousness.

The objectivity of material sciences and the subjectivity of the human experience (Qualia) have shown that there is a deep divide between the two, which is not bridgeable. However, Crick and Koch have circumvented this question and trying to find out what is happening in the brain when consciousness is present.
