The third stage dating from the late 1990s onwards has witnessed the strengthening of social appraisal through the launching of externally set and certified standards.

There are many issues and factors which have led to Corporate Social Responsibility becoming one of the core concerns of today’s organization.  Ernst & Young (2002) propose that there are 5 key drivers which have controlled the growing business focus on CSR specifically

  • Enhanced stakeholder comprehension of corporate moral, collective and environmental behaviour;
  • Direct stakeholder burden;
  • Investor demands;
  • Peer pressure
  • New  sense of social responsibility
