The majority of Americans sketch their family origins to a country other than the United States. Many immigrants arrive to this country in search of greater freedom or an opportunity for a superior life. Some came against their will and were forced to give labor that helped build the nation. Immigrants brought with them a pride in their heritage, and characteristic cultural traditions and values. Barrett defines culture as “the body of learned beliefs, traditions, and guides for behavior that are shared among members of any human society” (p. 54).
What does it mean to be an American? Being an American means not to be a part of the melting pot but a mosaic as people co-exist with different people, different beliefs, expectations and dreams. My last name is Crosson, which is derived from McCrosson— a native Irish name. The Irish, who add a large piece to this national mixture, began arriving in America during the Colonial Period. They have been continually coming in increasingly large numbers, over the next centuries. “As many as 4.5 million Irish arrived in America between 1820 and 1930. In time, the sum total of Irish-Americans surpasses the entire population of Ireland and New York City boasted more Irishmen than Dublin, Ireland!” (Irish contribution to American Culture)
