David Hume was an empiricist. He believed that awareness depends primarily on experience, not cause. He denies that there are any innate ideas. When we come into this world, we are devoid of knowledge and totally innocent of any ideas, including God. Hume seems to think since we have never observed God directly, we can have no experience by which to confirm to his existence or non-existence. However, it is probable to draw inferences based on observed cause and effect and if, based on these assumption, we decide that God does exist, that this just as rational an assumption to make as any other. Hume posits that the logic of those who believe in God’s continuation fails when they try to understand the details of God’s nature.
Belief is therefore based completely in faith, not in reason. Since it is unfeasible to prove whether God exists or not, we must make a leap of faith in declare his existence. One might say that man created God in order to explain certain comments about the world that could not be readily explained. It is very simple to say that something happens because it is God’s will rather than try and recognize the event yourself. Over the years, God has been related with creating the universe, spawning life on Earth, inspiring peace, inspiring war, keeping a general order in all things.
