They often got past with their masters over the terms of their dependence, and sometimes eventually acquired their freedom. This was due to the fact they were not use to being enslaved as the following quote explains:
“Although some of the new arrivals hailed from Africa, most had already spent time in the New World, understood the languages of the Atlantic, bore Hispanic and occasionally English names, familiar with Christianity and other aspects of the European culture. Set to work alongside a mélange of English and Irish servants, little, but skin color distinguished them from others who labored the region’s tobacco fields. Though the fist fifty years of English and African settlement in the Chesapeake, black and white workers lived and worked together in ways that blurred racial lines” (p. 29).
From this quote, it is easy to see that Africans were used to being free and being able to live along with work with other races without becoming enslaved. This is why they able to get around their masters enslavement in the supposed slave societies. Therefore, this book re-amalgamates slaves into the American working class and into the mending of the nation.
By contrast, in the Deep South, the development of the society with slaves into a slave society was accelerated by the appearance of a planter class and combined by the growth of cotton as an accumulation export crop. Plantation slavery instigated to presuppose the patriarchal and corporate features recognizable to people of today. However, as Berlin notes, at the commencement of the 19th century, the immeasurable preponderance of black people, slave and free did not inhabit in the black belt, grow cotton, or subscribe to Christianity. A well-researched narrative that points to the complex nature of American slavery that was the speciousness of many of the stereotypes, and the exceptional world shaped by the slaves themselves. However, during the late seventeenth century, slaves were treated as free people as shown in the following quote:
