Why do people develop an eating disorder? There is no one answer to this question and certainly no easy explanation as to why people fall prey to this problem. There are many eating disorders which exist however the most common ones are bulimia and anorexia nervosa which affect teenagers and young adults to the greatest extent (Larocca). There are 6 areas which can explain why a person falls prey to a disorder like bulimia or anorexia. The areas which explain this are psychological factors, social factors, cultural factors, biological factors, the family and the media (Siegel, Brisman, Weinshel).
Bulimia and anorexia can be seen as a result of biological factors. Researchers have also been able to prove that a person’s temperament is also something which can be determined biologically/genetically (Siegel, Brisman, Weinshel). This theory can be easily proven by analyzing children who come from the same parents and turn out to be quite different from each other.
