Beginning in the 1960’s and 1970’s, divorce rates rose severely, and in the process many children of divorce were produced. Since that time, many studies have scrutinized the effects of divorce on these children. Among other things, these studies have found that children of divorce experience an huge sense of loss, often show mild depressive sign, and are more likely to engage in criminal and antisocial behavior. While these picky effects are detected mostly in childhood in the years instantly following the divorce, another distressing finding extends into adulthood. Adult children of divorce have higher divorce rates than adults with parents in stable marriages. Fresh research has dealt with the causes behind these statistics. For obvious cause, children see divorce as something very upsetting. They are often anxious with their own security, not always with their parent’s happiness.

Children react in diverse ways with the onset of divorce. Some will be enormously sad and show signs of depression and even insomnia. Anxiety levels peak as they feel they are going to be deserted or rejected by one or even both parents. Some divorce condition may make the child feel lonely. This may be due to a long nonexistence of one of the parents.
No matter what the circumstances, the child will be influenced in some way by a divorce. Some children may become psychologically wounded from the experience, and still other children may not be affected expressively at all. Much depends on how well the parents are able to handle the circumstances.
