This is a term paper on economic impact of acid rain on New York city. The Acid rain, ground-level ozone and other pollution resultant from fossil fuel combustion are major problems because they affect the quality of life and have important economic costs in health care, agriculture and forestry.
The Acid rain, ground-level ozone and other pollution resultant from fossil fuel combustion are major problems because they affect the quality of life and have important economic costs in health care, agriculture and forestry. Poor air quality in the urban core aggravates the already-difficult position the urban centers have in competing with suburban areas for new and expanding businesses and the employees and tax base they bring.
The transportation, electric power and industrial systems that we have developed appear to have been planned to optimize the production of the oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen. Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide CO2 have increased by 30% since pre-industrial times, while nitrogen and sulfur oxide releases have each more than twice since then.
Although the relationship is definitely controversial, acid rain is related to sulfur dioxide (SO2).’ Combustion in fossil fuel-fired power plants and chemical processes in other industries generate vast mass of oxides of oxygen that normally are emitted to the environment as waste. In the case of sulfur dioxide, emissions may be dispersed as far as several hundred miles from the source and along the way become dissolved in atmospheric moisture, forming acid, which is deposited downwind as precipitation. The use of high sulfur coal to generate electricity is not simply a matter of unconstrained choice, however. Federal regulation has urged producers away from the use of low sulfur coal and natural gas, which would create little or no SO2. As in many other cases, the demand for one regulation has direct to the demand for another….
