High school students today date basically within their friendship groups, seldom venturing outside of that group for a date. This means the girls and guys already know each other pretty well and often they come together as a “couple” in a group-dating atmosphere. There often is never an official first date, just a moment when they started to hang out with each other more or less solely within the context of their friendship cluster. Only about half of high school students have considerable relationship with a member of the opposite sex during high school. And what is more, it has less to do with physical appearance than you and I might think. Your son or daughter may be part of a single sex friendship cluster that doesn’t provide many opening for dating or your child may not fit into the “ideal” teen culture is currently worshipping. Is true that some students, both male and female are totally engrossed by the opposite sex and think about little else. But a surprising number of students just aren’t that interested in the entire dating scene. For some teens, sports and academics are more essential. Some students are content with close same sex friends. It doesn’t mean your child is weird or abnormal if he or she doesn’t seem to be nuts about girls or boys.

Feiring (1996) explored these types of dating relationships among fifteen-year-olds. She found that the mass of fifteen-year-olds had some dating experience. Her study also focused on the contexts of adolescent dates. Feiring found that fifteen-year-olds had more dates in public places than in private places. These teens went to the movies, dinner, and parties most often on dates, or just simply “hung out”. Moreover, when teens first began dating, they went on more group dates than solo dates (Feiring, 1996), which suggest that dates in early adolescence are not actually a about being intimate, but rather are opportunities for girls and boys to have fun and gain experience with the other sex.
