Wills’ The Day the Enlightenment Went out first discusses the brilliance of Karl Rove the political strategist who was played he most significant role in drawing out the religious conservatives to vote. He drew out the evangelists who believe in virgin birth then in evolution and who have fought for many causes like abortion, prayer in school and gay marriages. He pushed Mr. Bush to endorse ban on Gay marriages, although he had opposed it before. He gives the example of Dalai Lama, who envied the enlightenment, which was the foundation of American heritage, and popular government was not possible without reason, as Wills and dalai lama believe.  He then questions whether America is still an enlightened nation, has it lost link with its history, as reason and evidence make no difference to a large number of   people. He then goes on to say that Americans have more things in common with the Muslim world and the extremist elements then with the Europeans.
