Emile Durkheim, born in 1858, is often referred to as one of the founding fathers of sociology. His work on division of labor illuminated the possibility of a rift between individual and collective consciousness and he stressed on the importance of education as a means of preventing anomie, i.e. a state where norms are vague or non-existent, leading to deviant behavior (Thompson, 1982).
