Sample Term Paper
This term paper discusses the endangered apes and how mankind is eradicating its closest relatives through different means. Human’s closest living relatives are the world’s apes: monkeys, lemurs and other primates. They are facing increasing danger from humans and some could soon vanish forever.
Apes in Crisis
Human’s closest living relatives are the world’s apes: monkeys, lemurs and other primates. They are facing increasing danger from humans and some could soon vanish forever, 25 percent-or one in four of the primate species and subspecies are at risk of extinction. Deforestation, commercial bush meat hunting, the illegal animal trade as the main threat for the desertion of Apes, and the environmental catastrophe like global warming and warfare have also played a part in this shrinkage. (Butynski, 2001)
Hunting and the Bushmeat Trade
Hunting for subsistence and commercial purposes also is a foremost and insidious threat, especially in Africa and Asia. The bushmeat issue is the biggest threat facing the survival of chimpanzees and gorillas in Africa today and it is estimated by some scientists that chimpanzees may only have between 5-10 years before they become extinct in the wild.
It happens in equatorial Africa, especially those countries —Cameroon, Gabon, and Congo’s, among others–where chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas live in the wild but often find their way, dead, into meat markets, even eating places. The problem of bushmeat in central Africa is intertwined with industrial logging, which brings roads, trucks, hungry workers and their families and guns into forest areas once far less accessible. National laws against hunting apes and selling their flesh often go unenforced in border regions, where timber companies can function as autonomous authorities. Corruption is common at checkpoints and border crossings, and the trade in ape meat is mostly underground. Consequently it’s hard to pin down precisely what’s going on. For example, Miss Waldron’s Red Colobus monkey is now gone-shot into extinction by “bushmeat” hunters seeking to fill additional cooking pots with game from swiftly shrinking forests.
