Jealousy makes a person not only unhappy but creates in him or her a need to compete with other people in terms of material things,  or status in society. For example in one social circle, people tend to compete in terms of the car they drive the size of their houses and the school their children attend.

Jealousy though is self-destructive as it creates in person anger as another person may have something which he or she wants. Jealousy is not only inwards but also outwards in some cases as the jealous person may end up harming the person he or she is jealous of.  Feelings of jealousy always appear to stem from one’s sense that something about their life is not secure, is uncertain or in danger. (Jealousy) thus jealousy can be also in terms of relationships.

Selfishness is the main characteristic of our individualistic society, where from childhood humans are encouraged to think in terms of their own selves and their desires. the whole life of a person is spent fulfilling his own selfish needs at the expense of others, once children turn eighteen the parents don’t feel responsible for them, and once the child leaves home he is more concerned about his or her life and future then about his old parents, this insular and selfish nature of people is representative of the whole society.  Some people may regard selfishness as a positive attitude and name it as self-interest, but the fact remains that:  Renaming ‘selfishness’ as ‘self interest’ is playing with semantics and while that’s important in itself the really important thing is to recognize that people to act from, and in accordance with, their own personal values and perceptions. The decisions they make reflect these values and perceptions. (What is Selfishness)
