Prison privatization is the name which is given to prisons being run and services related to prisons being carried out by the private sector. The state, local and federal prison facilities hire private sector companies to do this job.
Some of the companies are responsible for only providing the prison with counseling, medical and health care facilities, maintenance within the jail and prison and providing food. Nowadays, the companies in the private sector are however mostly responsible for designing and constructing the prisons. They are also held responsible for operating new jails on the state level as well as the federal level.
Why is there a trend toward privatization? The reasons behind this are many. It could be due to more people committing crimes and hence the populations of the prisons have increased. The population of prisons could also be increasing due to the laws having become stricter. Another answer to this question could be due to the war on drugs, the increase in the construction costs and maintenance of these prisons and also the increase in the cost of incarcerating prisoners and caring for them as well (Allen, Simonsen, Latessa, and Ponder). All these have led to the increase in privatization as far as prisons are concerned.
