Many of the theories used in supervision are based on theories of counseling. For example, the cognitive- behavioral model emphasizes the teaching role of the supervisor, whose main goal is to teach the supervisee techniques and orientations of the theory.

The supervisor focuses on the supervisee’s actions and cognition towards the client. The person- centered model on the other hand assumes that the supervisee has the capacity to develop as a counselor and the supervisor is a colleague who provides an atmosphere that allows the supervisee to connect with his client entirely (Haynes, Corey & Moulton, 2003).
