Historically, in 1992 benzodiazepines was favored for first line therapy, but changed by 1997 where SSRIs were more frequently recommended for GAD condition. Thus, the therapy shifted from treatment of non-comorbid GAD with benzodiazepines to increased use of antidepressants.
