This is an essay on types of nebulae. Emission Line Nebulae: These are substance which contains gas that gives off electromagnetic radiation at specific energies or wavelengths. Emission at a specific wavelength called an emission line happens when an electron moves from an excited state in an atom or ion to a less excited state, or the ground state.

What are the three types of nebulae and the difference between them?

There are three types of nebulae:

Emission Line Nebulae: These are substance which contains gas that gives off electromagnetic radiation at specific energies or wavelengths. Emission at a specific wavelength called an emission line happens when an electron moves from an excited state in an atom or ion to a less excited state, or the ground state. Planetary nebulae and supernovae remnants are types of emission line nebulae. An emission line nebula is a visually luminous body. Generally the light is red, depending on the wavelength of the dominant emission line.

Reflection Nebulae: These are objects which contain dust that replicate the light of nearby stars. A spectrum of a reflection nebula looks like the spectrum of the starlight it is reflecting. Thus, a reflection nebula does not produce its own visible light.

Dark Nebulae: These are objects containing dust that hinders our view of background stars. Thus, a dark nebula might look like a blank region of the sky where few or no stars are spot. Like a reflection nebulae, a dark nebulae also does not generate it own perceptible light. If a bright star was placed in the right location next to dark nebulae, it would become reflection nebulae.
