Abstract: school violence has increased over the past few years and many teenagers as well as teachers have lost their lives due to this new wave of violence.

In the past years, schools have witnessed an outbreak of violence, which has overtaken many schools in the nation. From shootings in schools, such as the Columbine incident, to bomb threats, which are received daily all over the country, acts of violence are becoming even more common and dangerous. It has even become quite common for us to hear about violent acts being committed by youth today.

The violence does not pertain to any specific area of the country or city, it takes place everywhere be it the inner city or the suburban areas of the city. When addressing this issue of violence among youth and in the school, one can only ask when it began and what caused it to occur. There are many myths about school; however, there are ways in which it can be tapered, which need to be figured out.

Violence in schools has not had any specific pattern over many years; however, statistics are available that date as far back as the 1970s. In the year 1978, 282000 high school students were assaulted along with 5200 teachers in the same year (Elliot). In the following years, 1984-1994, the number of teenagers who lost their lives in school violence doubled; however, the number of adults who were killed reduced (Elliot).
