To understand if God is present, we must first answer the question “Who is God?” St. Anselm of Canterbury in the 11th Century provides a meaning of God and theories in support of His existence. He developed the “Ontological Argument”. This argument states that God is that “which nothing greater can be thought”. In non-technical language, God is an all-perfect being. If we could imagine a more perfect being, that new being would be God. St. Anselm states that everybody has an idea of God. The God we think of has perfect moral qualities. God loves all, knowing all, and merciful. The fool, disbeliever, also has this idea of God, but contradict any actual being corresponding to with the idea. According to St. Anselm, the fool contradicts himself when he states, “There is no God”. In actuality, when the fool states, “There is no God”, he is really, saying ‘There is no perfect being that exists”. The fool is denying one of God’s ideal qualities: existence. God would have to exist because he is an ideal being.
