This essay discusses the poem Hugh Selwyn Mauberley by Ezra Pound. Pound’s poem or the two stanzas also talk about war but from the perspective of soldiers, giving the reasons behind what motivates each soldier to sign up and join the war.

Pound’s poem or the two stanzas also talk about war but from the perspective of soldiers, giving the reasons behind what motivates each soldier to sign up and join the war. People go to war because to some it’s an adventure, others are running away from their own weakness, while some go for the very brutality which they enjoy. And some as it stimulates their imagination, however all of them come back from war either they survive to relive the brutality and the carnage over an over again or become the object of this violence and go to waste disillusioned with the world. All of them wasted, young and old. All of them suffers, especially the ones who die, as he recounts in the fifth stanza, discussing actually what they died for, it was not for saving anyone, but for things which in reality don’t really matter things like broken statutes as he says it.

Pound is really mourning the futility of war as what the young soldiers go out for are their ideals whatever they may be but what they get in return is death destruction ad a reality which is not only monstrous but also unimaginably petty. What is expected and what actually occurs are two very different things, following the leaders in their thirst for power and control. The tragedy here is that the soldiers don’t know what they may be encountering and experiencing.
