This essay discusses fetal alcohol syndrome. Alcohol is a substance which many people drink on a daily basis. What people do not realize is that alcohol can have severe side effects. One of the problems which arise due to alcohol is the fetal alcohol syndrome.

Alcohol is a substance which many people drink on a daily basis. What people do not realize is that alcohol can have severe side effects. One of the problems which arise due to alcohol is the fetal alcohol syndrome. This disease refers to the mental and physical defects which arise in a child due to the mother having drunk alcohol while pregnant.

The fetal alcohol syndrome includes problems in the child such as deficiency in growth, mental retardation, dysfunction of the nervous system, behavior problems and even facial abnormalities.

One of major reasons as to why women drink during pregnancy is because they are unaware of whether they should drink or not. Communities throughout various countries all over the world need to inform mothers of the risks related to consuming alcohol while pregnant. But the problem is that even the health care personnel are not aware of the risk of women drinking alcohol while pregnant. For them to pass on information to these women, they would have to be aware themselves.

In medical schools, less than 10 percent of students are able to diagnose fetal alcohol syndrome properly which does not allow them to complete their course as they are unable to make a proper referral when drug abuse is concerned and many times this problem passes away without being diagnosed properly.

Studies have shown that a doctor is more likely to tell a white woman to stop drinking and smoking while she is pregnant rather than telling a black woman. Due to this, black women who were pregnant were 30% more likely to report never having been told to stop drinking while pregnant (The New York Times)
