Fiber optic technology experienced a phenomenal rate of development in the second half of the twentieth century. Early success came during the 1950’s with the development of the fiberscope. Early all-glass fibers experienced excessive optical loss, this motivated scientists to develop glass fibers that included a separate glass coating. Proposals for using optical fibers to avoid degradation of the optical signal while propagating through the atmosphere were made almost simultaneously in 1966. (Senior 10) The first of the low-loss optical fibers was created in 1970. In 1980, the first major Fiber Optic communication link between Boston, and Richmond, was created. A year later, low-loss, single-mode fibers with high bandwidth and low loss capabilities to increase data transmission rates were created. Beginning in the mid-eighties, the major communication companies began installing long distance Fiber Optic communication systems using single-mode fibers. In 1988 the first transatlantic Fiber Optic cable was set up.
Since then, Optical Fiber technology has been implemented in major communication networks that have realized its implication and importance.
Composition and Working
The innermost region of the fiber, or core, was used to transmit the light, (Stix 82) while the glass coating, or cladding, barred the light from leaking out of the core by reflecting the light within the boundaries of the core. This concept is explained by Snell’s Law, which states that the angle at which light is reflected is dependent on the refractive indices of the two materials.
